Mare de Déu del Mont

The Mare de Déu del Mont is the highest peak in the eastern part of Alta Garrotxa, stretching from Camprodon to Maçanet de Cabrenys and Cabanelles. Monsignor Jacint Verdaguer likened its unique shape to a camel descending from the Pyrenees towards the Gulf of Roses, with a sanctuary on its hump and the castle of Falgars on its head.

Standing at 1,124 meters, the mountain features steep slopes on all sides except near the Pla de Solls and the Sant Llorenç de Sous monastery. Its vegetation varies with sun exposure and altitude: oaks and colonizing white pines at lower levels, Scots pines, Martino oaks, and shrubs like cadmium and juniper higher up, and a significant beech forest near Falgars farmhouse.

Human habitation is sparse, limited to the Espinau and Falgars farms, with the formerly settled Sous now abandoned. The closest inhabited area is Lliurona, reinhabited in the 1970s, with other nearby towns being Beuda, Sales de Llierca, and Cabanelles.
