The Bores del Borró is a cave system formed by a series of galleries excavated in gypsum soil near the town of Sales de Llierca, in the Alta Garrotxa region.
The galleries are generally narrow and emerge at various points, forming small sinkholes called bores, numbered 1 to 11.
The route through the galleries is easy in some sections, while in others they are narrow tunnels with muddy or even flooded sections. There are also labyrinthine areas with several intersecting galleries.
We took an underground tour, visiting part of the galleries, specifically the section that connects bores 1 and 2 and the gallery area that begins at Bora 4 and goes toward Bora 11 without reaching it, ending in a labyrinthine area near the exit.
To reach the Bores del Borró, we must head to Sales de Llierca, a small, scattered town. Arriving along the road, we pass by the church of Sant Martí de Sales and the small town hall building.
We continue a little further along the road, which ends at the Tomet farmhouse. Shortly before reaching the farmhouse, there is a small widening of the road where we can park. At this point, the track begins.
We continue along the road and pass by the farmhouse. Next to it, there is a truly monumental oak tree. The road turns into a track, and we follow it through the forest. We soon pass a canal bridge over the Riera de Borró. Shortly after, we leave the track, taking a path to the right. The path, now a trail, descends to the streambed, and we follow it for a while until a milestone marks the start of a small path to the left that climbs steeply through the forest.
The trail takes us in a few minutes to the entrance to the first of the system's mouths: Bora 1, also called Bora de Can Bellús.
There are many different routes available, but we took the underground route between Bora 1 and Bora 2. It's an easy route that gives us a first glimpse of the nature of this system. After Bora 2, the tunnel continues, but it's a narrow, flooded, and muddy tunnel. We decided not to continue through this quagmire.
At Bora 2, there are knotted ropes that help us get out (easy).
After exiting through Bora 2, we retraced the same path to Bora 1. From there, we took a path through the forest to Bora 4, where the trail ends.
Entering through Bora 4, we made a long journey to a labyrinthine area where we were unable to find the passage to Bora 11, where we had intended to exit.
